Downer Hardware

2629 N Downer Avenue
(414) 332-2820

It's nothing specific that gets Downer Hardware on The N**E List, but rather everything they do. It's a tiny little place, but they always seem to have whatever I'm looking for. And even though it's very much a cramped, old-school hardware store, I can guaranty you won't spend much time looking for anything. Normally, I'm the first one to complain about over-zealous sales associates who won't leave you alone when you're just browsing. But rarely does anyone enter a hardware store without looking for something specific. When the person who invariably greets you as you walk through the door asks if they can help you find anything, tell them! They'll take you to the item you're looking for right away. And if they don't have it, they'll either help you find an alternative, order it or even tell you at what other store it can be found.

If you live on the East Side, check out Downer Hardware, and tell them The N**E List sent you!

Tuffy Auto on 27th and Layton

I have been a loyal customer of Don Stewart at Tuffy since they opened (1999ish). The first car that I took there was my 1974 Plymouth Satellite Sebring. I loved that car. It had a built 360 cubic inch gas guzzling V-8. I went through a lot of rear tires. The car was in desperate need of an exhaust system in 1999. Tuffy had just opened within a few weeks. Being on a very tight budget, read cheap, I was shopping for the best price to replace the rusted out single exhaust with a new duel exhaust system. I wanted a duel exhaust system because it would help with my fuel economy, and it would sound cooler.

You would be surprised at how many places would not build an exhaust system for my car. Because it was 25 years old at the time and not a very popular car to begin with, you could not just order the pre-bent pipes. They had to be custom made/bent.

I walked into Tuffy for a quote and Don was very competitive with the other quotes I had gotten. As I was hemming and hawing about it, he asked me what the best quote was for the work. I told him and he immediately said he would match it. Cool. He got the job.

I was in the shop watching them bend the pipes. They did have a book with the basic blueprint of the pipes to help them. If you have ever watched American Chopper or American Hot Rod or any of those other shows where they custom bend exhaust pipes that is exactly the way the Don and his crew did it. Bend the pipe, put it up on the car and see how it fits and bend it some more until it is done. It was a great experience. They made the exhaust almost perfect, for the lowest price I could find.

Since that moment, I have been a dedicated customer of Don’s. He had worked on my ’74 Plymouth several times. In addition he has worked on my 1983 Honda Accord, 2000 Honda Civic, 1992 Chevy Cavalier, 1993 Buick Century, and 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. All of them he has worked on with the utmost care. On the few occasions in which something was not done to my satisfaction, Don never argued with me. He just pulled the car into a bay and fixed the problem.

His prices are very reasonable too. For example, the 30,000-mile factory scheduled maintenance on my Honda Civic at the Honda dealer ship was well over $300. Don did it for me for about ½ the price.

The best part is that he is honest. I have taken my car in thinking that I was going to be spending big bucks on something and drove away with money to spare. I went in once thinking that my Buick needed a full tune up earlier than scheduled. It turned out that all I needed was a $12 fuel filter.

Don has always been accommodating to my schedule and able to get my car in for service. He is honest, does the work right the first time and he is extremely affordable for the work that he does.

If you are in need of car repair give Don at Tuffy on 27th and Layton in Milwaukee a try. He does almost any type of repair to a car, truck, van or SUV. He will do the basic oil change/brakes/exhaust all the way up to an engine swap.
